Moray MP Douglas Ross has welcomed £227million in funding from the UK Government to support the Post Office network across the country.
The investment was announced as part of the Chancellor’s Spending Review earlier this year, with £50million to extend the network subsidy and £177million to invest in the future of the network.
It will ensure that Post Office branches in every part of the country can keep providing essential services for people that rely on them now and in the future.
Scottish Conservative MP for Moray Douglas Ross said:
“The Post Office network is vital for rural communities like those here in Moray.
“The Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of these outlets and the services they provide.
“Aside from the traditional work they do with parcels and letters, Post Offices also provide access to cash and many other essential services.
“Given the number of bank branches that have closed over recent years, access to cash is a big issue for many people in towns and villages across Moray.
“The Post Office really can be a lifeline for communities, and this extra funding announced will go a long way to maintaining and improving the service in the months and years ahead.”
Royal Mail Postmaster for Forres, Paul McBain, said:
“Christmas is always a busy time for the Post Office. but I have seen much more mail being posted this year due to the pandemic with people not travelling to family for Christmas.”
