Moray MP Douglas Ross has welcomed the significant extension to the Furlough scheme by the UK Government which will continue to protect millions of jobs until at least October with a four-month extension announced by Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak, earlier today.
Commenting Douglas said: “The Furlough scheme from the UK Government has been one of the most generous in the world and has protected thousands of jobs here in Moray and millions across the UK.
“The extension announced by the Chancellor provides reassurance to both employees and employers that this support will continue for several more months as we deal with this Pandemic, while also supporting businesses to be in a strong position to bounce back when the restrictions are gradually lifted. With much of the workforce remaining in place ready to get going as the country reopens, this provides the best platform for businesses to continue in the future.
“I’ve heard both in my role as local MP and as Scotland Office minister how vital this scheme has been to protect businesses and the livelihoods of their employees; and while it was originally announced for a three month period, there have recently been calls for it to be extended further. The UK Government has listened and responded positively with the extension until the end of October.
“Importantly, there is now more flexibility in the system and businesses will be able to have staff working on a part time basis while still being furloughed in a further adaption to the scheme. I know this will be warmly welcomed as flexibility has been called for, and again the UK Government has delivered this.
“At a time of ongoing uncertainty, the support delivered from the UK Government to protect jobs and businesses continues at pace. We continue our fight to defeat this virus while also reigniting our economy.”
