Douglas Ross MSP has secured one of the first Member’s debates in the Scottish Parliament following the election on a matter of crucial importance to people in Moray. Tomorrow (Tuesday) MSPs will have the opportunity to debate the lack of a consultant led maternity unit at Dr Gray’s and back calls for the situation to be urgently addressed by the Scottish Government and NHS Grampian.
Speaking ahead of the debate Douglas said: “We were told back in 2018 that the downgrade would be temporary, for up to a year. Almost three years on expectant mums and their families still face the prospect of journeys to Inverness or Aberdeen to give birth.
“I’m pleased to have secured this debate so early on in this session of Parliament as it is an issue that has been raised with me so many times. People across Moray are frustrated that we still have no clear plan on how the consultant led unit will be restored.
“The longer this goes on, the greater the number of expectant mums that will be forced to travel outwith Moray to give birth. I hope this debate will focus minds in the government and the health board to deliver for the families in Moray who have been campaigning for the restoration of the service along with KeepMUM since the initial decision was taken to downgrade the maternity unit.”
