Moray MP Douglas Ross has highlighted local concerns from constituents after the Scottish Government refused to delay new legislation requiring people to have an interlinked fire alarm system. The law came into force today (February 1st).
Commenting, Douglas said: “I have been contacted by many constituents from across Moray who are extremely worried by this new legislation and ae unsure about what they have to do or how they are expected to pay for new alarms which are costing hundreds of pounds. There has been so little information from the SNP Scottish Government, and many people are unprepared for this new legislation which is now in force. This is why the Scottish Conservatives have repeatedly called for a delay in the legislation.
“I’ve also been contacted by electricians in Moray who have told me that they are simply unable to get the stock to fit the alarms and are warning that people won’t be able to meet the new requirements any time soon as the resources just aren’t there.
“Scottish Conservatives have been urging the SNP to put a hold on this legislation as many people are simply unable to comply and haven’t had enough time or information to do so.
“With a poll revealing that nearly half of the people in Scotland aren’t ready, it would have made sense to delay this legislation, but the SNP have charged on regardless.
“This has been rolled out extremely poorly by the Scottish Government and ministers need to act now to reassure people about the implications of continuing with a policy that so many can’t adhere to.”
