Moray MP Douglas Ross has called on local people in Moray to redouble their efforts to restore the maternity and paediatric service at Dr Gray’s Hospital which has been downgraded in recent months. He made his comments following a meeting with senior managers who have been tasked by Health Secretary Jeane Freeman to deliver a plan within a fortnight, and in the wake of an announcement by NHS Grampian that they are holding public workshops to discuss this over the next week.
Commenting Douglas said: “It is vitally important that the whole community comes together to make it very clear that we demand the restoration of these vital services. The public workshops provide an opportunity for us all to make a contribution to the planning process so that we get this right and to ensure that Dr Gray’s is put on a sustainable footing for the future. I’ll be attending and I know many local people with concerns about these services will be there too.
“It seems clear from discussions that the service at Dr Gray’s will have to become less dependent on junior doctors. If that is the case, then the new model must be robust and one that mums and their families can have confidence in. It is really important therefore that community groups like KeepMUM have every opportunity to contribute their thoughts. I also hope that staff can be open with their views as well. Many have contacted me with their frustrations in recent weeks and we have to ensure we support them as they do an incredible job for us locally.
“However, I have to say, that it is very disappointing that the Scottish Government has let things deteriorate to the point that the Cabinet Secretary has finally had to come to Moray to demand a business plan be put in place in a short period of time. This should never have been allowed to get to this stage, but it is crucial that we now get the right system that meets the needs of individuals and families in Moray.”
The public sessions will take place at Alexander Graham Bell Centre, Moray College, at the following times: Saturday 11th August 10am- 12 noon; Tuesday 14th August 6:30-8:30 pm; Thursday 16th August 6:30-8:30pm
